Update: March 20

Independence Bridge Update

Preparing for the Opening of Shipping Season

The temporary full closure of Independence Bridge resumed this week and will continue through April 14 at 6pm.

This work is necessary NOW to prepare for the return of the shipping season on the river in mid April. Our construction, design, and engineering teams are conducting a process called “commissioning” whereby we install, test and adjust a multitude of components, sensors and safety features on the movable spans to ensure they raise and lower for shipping traffic. We will also be pouring concrete on the bascule decking in staggered phases. This is work we cannot do with traffic present on the bridge.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes the community and sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete this important phase of Indy’s construction and rehabilitation. We are still on track to reopen all four newly rehabbed lanes by the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, our customer service team is here to help you!
